An open-air market (ринок, rynok) is the heart of a Ukrainian neighbourhood — fresh produce, friendly vendors, and a great place to practise. Here's how to shop and chat.
- Доброго дня! — DOH-bro-ho DNYA — Good day!
- Скільки це коштує? — SKIL-ky tse KOSH-tu-ye — How much does this cost?
- Дайте, будь ласка, один кілограм. — DIGH-te, bud LAS-ka, o-DYN kee-lo-HRAM — Give me one kilogram, please.
- Це свіже? — tse SVEE-zhe — Is this fresh?
- Можна спробувати? — MOZH-na spro-BU-va-ty — May I try a taste?
- Дуже дякую! — DU-zhe DYA-ku-yu — Thank you very much!
- Смачного! — smach-NO-ho — Enjoy your meal! (a warm thing to say)
Vendors love a customer who tries Ukrainian, and you'll often get a taste or a tip in return. Practise these with a Ukrainian speaker and your next market trip will be full of little conversations.
