Berlin doesn't do polished — it does raw, cheap(ish), creative and endlessly talkative. That last part is good news: Berliners will happily practise German with you, and switch to English the second you struggle (your job: don't let them).

  • Walk the East Side Gallery — 1.3 km of the Berlin Wall turned into the world's longest open-air gallery. Go early, the light on the murals is best before the crowds.
  • Spend a Sunday at Mauerpark — flea market, street food, and the famous open-air karaoke amphitheatre. Nothing teaches you German faster than a crowd chanting "Zugabe!" (encore).
  • Swim in Schlachtensee — Berlin has more lakes than any capital deserves. Locals take the S-Bahn out with a towel and a book; do the same and you're basically a Berliner.
  • Eat a midnight Döner at Mustafa's or your corner Imbiss — order in German: "Einmal mit allem und scharf, bitte." The vendor will grin; the queue will approve.
  • Get lost in Museumsinsel — five world-class museums on one island. The Pergamon's Ishtar Gate alone is worth the ticket.

Every one of these gets better when you can chat with the person next to you. Find a Berliner below and practise your German before you go — they'll tell you which lake is quietest.
